The head of Russia’s sole officially recognized anti-war party has affirmed his decision to remain in the country and continue advocating for change, despite escalating pressure from the authorities resulting in the party’s disqualification from the upcoming parliamentary elections. The Supreme Court’s recent ruling prohibited the post-Soviet liberal party, Yabloko, which translates to “apple” in Russian, from participating in the September vote. Nikolai Rybakov, the party leader, indicated to Reuters that the decision was a reflection of the authorities’ unease over the resonance of their appeal to end the ongoing conflict in Ukraine among voters.
Rybakov emphasized the significance of the overwhelming support from the public over the court’s verdict. Following the ruling, hundreds of supporters gathered outside the court premises, vocalizing their disapproval with chants of “shame” that reverberated inside. Yabloko, previously a prominent liberal voice in parliament and a government critic, now holds only a few regional seats with no representation in the State Duma, the parliament’s lower chamber dominated by the Putin-endorsed United Russia party.
While United Russia is poised to maintain its supremacy in the upcoming elections, Rybakov expressed confidence that Yabloko would present a more formidable challenge if allowed to compete. The party is contesting the Supreme Court’s decision, which stemmed from accusations of undisclosed campaign backing from Western sources, among other allegations that Yabloko refutes.
The opposition leader, Rybakov, reiterated his commitment to staying in Russia despite stringent censorship regulations and wartime laws that have prompted many dissenting voices to flee or face legal repercussions. He underscored the importance of effecting change within Russia by remaining within the country, stressing his determination to advocate for peace and democratic prosperity through Yabloko’s concise manifesto.
Public sentiment opposing the war remains challenging to gauge due to strict governmental controls on dissent. However, data from the Levada Center indicates a decline in support for the Russian armed forces’ actions in Ukraine, with only 66 percent of Russians backing the military operations in July, the lowest level since February 2022.
Rybakov highlighted the growing support for Yabloko’s peace-centric platform, illustrating a widespread desire within Russian society for an end to the conflict. He emphasized the resilience of like-minded individuals, asserting that despite attempts to impede Yabloko’s influence, the shared vision of millions aligned with the party’s objectives cannot be quelled.
On social media, videos backing Yabloko have circulated, depicting individuals displaying apples as a symbol of support or engaging in dances set to Russian tunes referencing apples, reflecting the party’s growing appeal among diverse demographics.
