Woman Gouges Eyes in Church: Overcomes Tragedy

A young lady shouted six chilling words before committing the shocking act of gouging out her own eyes outside a church.

Today marks the 28th birthday of Kaylee Muthart, who now lives with a positive outlook despite her visual impairment. At the age of 20, she permanently lost her sight during a meth-induced psychotic episode when she believed that removing her eyes would bring her closer to God and save the world.

Diagnosed with bipolar disorder, Kaylee was on the brink of entering rehab in February 2018 after her mother raised concerns. Following a drug-infused breakup and mental collapse, she consumed a large amount of meth, resulting in her sudden blindness.

Driven by delusions, Kaylee found herself at a church, hallucinating and convinced that sacrificing her eyes was necessary to prevent a catastrophic event. Despite the horrific nature of her self-harm, she continued with the act while shouting, “I want to see the light!”

After being restrained, Kaylee was rushed to the hospital where emergency surgery was performed to address her injuries. Despite her ordeal, Kaylee has embraced Christianity and shown remarkable resilience. She attended a school for the blind, completed her high school education, and learned essential skills like braille and communication technologies.

Following her rehabilitation and sobriety, Kaylee reflected on the life she might have had if not for her tragic experience. She expressed a desire to witness the world again, cherish moments with loved ones, and observe the colors of her cat, acquired post-blindness.

Kaylee, now equipped with prosthetic eyes, views her blindness as a barrier to relapse and a preferable alternative to drug addiction. She remains grateful for the blessings in her life and continues to navigate the challenges of living without sight.
