Broadband has become a crucial aspect of our daily routines, supporting activities like streaming entertainment, remote work, home security through internet-connected cameras, and managing smart home devices such as lights and thermostats.
The demand for fast and reliable internet access is on the rise as households integrate more internet-connected gadgets and consume increasing amounts of online content. However, not all internet service providers (ISPs) deliver the same level of performance.
A recent study by SpeedGo, a new broadband speed-testing service, reveals that Virgin Media leads the UK in average download speeds, boasting an impressive 256.5Mbps. This speed allows for downloading a full HD movie in just over two minutes, significantly faster than the national average.
Following Virgin Media, Vodafone ranks second with an average download speed of 175Mbps, followed by BT (EE). TalkTalk lags behind at the bottom of the list with an average speed of under 95Mbps.
Here are the average download speeds of the top UK ISPs:
– Virgin Media – 256.5Mbps
– Vodafone – 175.1Mbps
– BT (EE) – 122.5Mbps
– Sky Broadband – 113.6Mbps
– TalkTalk – 94.7Mbps
In addition to download speeds, upload speeds are essential for users who frequently send large files or work remotely. Vodafone excelled in this aspect with an average upload speed of 83.6Mbps, surpassing Virgin Media, which ranked second with 47.2Mbps.
SpeedGo affirmed these results, stating, “In 2025, Virgin Media provided the fastest broadband internet in the United Kingdom with an average download speed of 256.5Mbps. The highest average upload speed was achieved by Vodafone at 83.6Mbps.”
