“TNT Sports Faces Backlash Over Ashes Coverage”

TNT Sports faced backlash for their coverage of the first day of The Ashes, with disappointed viewers expressing their frustration on social media. Despite securing the broadcasting rights for the Test cricket event, replacing Sky Sports, TNT Sports’ performance did not meet expectations.

Viewers who tuned in at 1:30 am complained about what they described as subpar and uninformed coverage. Criticism arose particularly from the fact that some commentators were not physically present in Australia, evident when they greeted viewers with “good morning” while the match was ongoing in the afternoon.

Disgruntled fans voiced their disappointment at the lack of diverse commentary, with one mentioning the absence of iconic figures from Ashes cricket in the commentary team. Some viewers expressed their preference for Australian commentators for a more engaging experience.

Although there were some presenters on-site in Australia providing analysis, lead commentators Alastair Eykyn and Rob Hatch, who received criticism for their limited cricket knowledge, were based in England. TNT Sports reportedly did not receive internal complaints about commentary delays, emphasizing Eykyn and Hatch’s backgrounds in rugby and cycling.

Criticism continued with viewers pointing out the absence of an Australian perspective, minimal crowd noise, delays in commentary, and a lack of detailed insights during the match. The disappointing start for England in the first innings, with key players like Zak Crawley and Joe Root falling to Mitchell Starc, added to the frustration.

Despite England’s struggles, Jofra Archer’s quick wickets provided a glimmer of hope. Notable dismissals included Usman Khawaja, Steve Smith, and Cameron Green and Travis Head by Captain Ben Stokes. Starc’s five-wicket haul, culminating in his own dismissal by Carse, ended the day’s play with England in a favorable position.
