A woman from the UK was discovered buried in a shallow grave in Florida after allegedly expressing a desire for a violent death to a man she met on a fetish website. Sonia Exelby, 32, from Portsmouth, had flown to the United States to meet individuals willing to kill her, as stated in a Florida police affidavit.
Authorities found her remains in a wooded area in Marion Oaks, Florida, shortly after she missed her return flight on October 13. An autopsy determined that she had died from four stab wounds.
Dwain Hall, 53, has been arrested on suspicion of murder and kidnapping charges, which he denies. If convicted, he could potentially face the death penalty. Officials claim that Sonia and Hall connected on a fetish website, with allegations suggesting that Sonia intended to be sexually abused, tortured, and killed in the US.
Hall allegedly picked Sonia up from Gainesville Regional Airport and took her to an Airbnb in Reddick, Marion County, which she had reserved using her credit card before arriving in the country. Prior to her arrival, Hall was reported to have purchased gun cleaner, rope, and a shovel from a nearby store.
Concerns were raised by a friend after Sonia left the UK, expressing worries about her vulnerable state. The friend shared information with Sonia’s Instagram followers, indicating that Sonia had placed herself in a precarious situation.
An affidavit revealed that Hall initially denied knowing Sonia but later admitted to transporting her to the Airbnb. Video evidence showed Sonia with bruises on her face, neck, and breasts, with Hall questioning her motives for traveling to the US.
Sonia allegedly confessed to wanting to be fatally stabbed and expressed self-deprecating sentiments to Hall. Detectives noted Sonia’s distress in the video and mentioned her attempts to communicate her changing feelings through messages to a friend on a messaging platform.
Hall claimed that Sonia owed him money to settle his debt, but he became enraged when she arrived in the US without the promised funds. He reportedly took money from her UK bank account. Investigators found that Hall exerted control over Sonia through recorded messages and coercive actions.
In court, Hall admitted to discussions with Sonia about bondage, suicide, and her desire for assisted death. After Sonia’s demise, Hall attempted to use her credit cards, leading to his arrest. He maintained that Sonia had wanted to die and described himself as a mentor to her.
Following these tragic events, authorities continue to gather evidence against Hall. The Foreign Office is providing support to Sonia’s family and coordinating with Florida officials. Emotional support resources are available for those in need during such distressing times.
