A woman, Staci Marklin, attributed her memory lapses to postpartum forgetfulness, commonly known as “mum brain,” before being diagnosed with early-onset Alzheimer’s disease at the age of 46. Living in Knoxville, Tennessee, Staci, now 47, first noticed her memory issues when her son Gunnar was just two years old. Initially attributing her forgetfulness to pregnancy and postpartum experiences, she later realized that her difficulty finding words was more than just a passing phase.
Despite being reassured by a doctor that her chances of developing early-onset dementia were slim, Staci’s symptoms worsened over time. Concerned due to her grandmother’s history with Alzheimer’s, she eventually sought medical help. After undergoing various tests, including MRIs and blood tests, Staci received the official diagnosis in October 2024 following an amyloid PET scan showing the presence of amyloid plaques in her brain.
Staci, grappling with the disbelief surrounding her condition, emphasized the misconception that Alzheimer’s is solely an older person’s ailment. She has taken proactive steps for her family’s future, such as creating TikTok videos for them to remember her by. Additionally, she has commenced a new treatment called lecanemab to combat early-onset Alzheimer’s, aiming to slow cognitive decline. Though this treatment is not provided by the NHS in the UK, Staci remains hopeful about its potential benefits.
Despite the challenges ahead, Staci maintains a positive outlook, cherishing moments with her family and striving to create lasting memories for her son as he grows up.
