Russian military leaders carried out an attack on Ukraine, unleashing nearly 500 bombs overnight, resulting in the deaths of six individuals. This assault occurred at a crucial juncture when Ukraine seemed inclined to accept a significant peace agreement brokered by the United States and Russia. Prior to this, Kyiv was indicating its willingness to agree to a revised peace plan, but the sudden Russian attack caused chaos and destruction in Kyiv, with fireballs erupting across the city.
The intense bombardment led to apartment buildings catching fire and widespread damage to infrastructure throughout Ukraine. A missile bearing a wartime marking of “Z” went astray and crashed into a residence in Moldova. Additionally, six lethal Russian drones breached Moldova’s airspace in one of the most severe violations since Russia’s full-scale invasion commenced.
In total, 22 missiles and 460 drones were deployed, forcing Ukrainians to seek shelter and causing disruptions in essential services like water, electricity, and heating in parts of the capital. Moldova’s Defense Ministry issued a warning for citizens to report any suspicious objects and to refrain from touching any fallen debris, urging them to notify authorities instead.
A drone crossed into Romanian airspace from Vylkove, Ukraine, toward the Kilia Veche area, prompting Romania to scramble two F-16 Fighting Falcon jets in response. President Volodymyr Zelensky confirmed the incursions of Russian drones into Moldova and Romania, with detailed flight paths documented.
Zelensky emphasized the urgent need to save lives daily and stressed the importance of weapons, air defense, and sustained sanctions against the aggressor. He called for unwavering international support and collaborative diplomatic efforts to exert pressure on Russia. The Mayor of Kyiv, Vitali Klitschko, reported casualties and damage in various parts of the city due to the attacks.
Following the attacks, European leaders engaged in critical discussions with Ukraine regarding a potential peace initiative. There are hopes to adjust the Trump-Putin peace plan to align more closely with the interests of European nations and reduce concessions to Moscow.
President Donald Trump’s inconsistent stance, which often favors Moscow, led to criticisms of Ukraine’s conduct in the conflict. Trump proposed a 28-point plan that seemed to align with Russian interests, demanding significant concessions from Ukraine, such as relinquishing control of occupied Donbas, refraining from NATO membership, and restricting troop numbers.
These terms, viewed as unacceptable by many experts given Ukraine’s sacrifices, underscore the challenges in reaching a viable peace agreement amid escalating tensions in the region.
