Australia’s temporary captain, Steve Smith, has spoken out following a tense confrontation with England’s fast bowler Jofra Archer during the closing phase of the match at the Gabba. England aimed to restrict Australia to under 64 runs, but Smith led his team to victory, clinching the win for the second consecutive Test.
Smith entered the game when Australia was struggling at 41-2 and swiftly guided his team to success by scoring an impressive 23 runs off just nine balls. He showcased his power by hitting two massive sixes and two fours, dominating Archer by scoring 15 runs off only five deliveries.
The intense exchange between Smith and Archer occurred during a crucial over at the Gabba, where Archer appeared visibly frustrated after being hit for a boundary by Smith. In response, Smith unleashed his batting prowess, dispatching Archer for a six over deep fine leg. England’s bowlers were left reeling from the onslaught.
In the subsequent over, Smith sealed the game with another six, propelling Australia to a commanding 2-0 lead as they head into the next Test in Adelaide.
When questioned about the on-field altercation with Archer, Smith remarked, “That stays on the field. It was good banter. He’s a good competitor and comes hard at you, so it was good fun.”
Archer’s evident frustration stemmed from his struggles with the pink ball during the second Test. England’s bowling unit failed to deliver their best performance, contrasting with their strong start on day one in Perth, which now feels like a distant memory.
After setting Australia a target of 334 runs, with Joe Root scoring an unbeaten 134 in the first innings, England faltered and finished day three trailing by 43 runs at 134-6.
Despite a late fightback by Ben Stokes and Will Jacks, England succumbed to Australia’s bowling attack, getting bowled out for 241.
Travis Head and Jake Weatherald provided a solid start to Australia’s chase, paving the way for Smith’s explosive innings. Reflecting on his aggressive approach, Smith mentioned, “It just felt right to play a few shots. He was obviously bowling quick, and I thought I’d hit a few and try to finish it quickly.”
Looking ahead, England faces a crucial challenge in Adelaide, as a failure to secure a victory will result in Australia retaining the Ashes. The third Test commences on December 17.
