“Quebec Man Makes History With Regenerated Liver”

A man from Quebec, aged 64, has made history in North America by being the first recipient of a regenerated liver using innovative technology. This breakthrough procedure has the potential to significantly increase the number of available livers for transplantation, with an estimated 20 to 24 additional livers becoming viable for transplant in the first year alone.

Gérard Landry, a resident of Nouvelle in Quebec, had been battling liver issues for 15 years, which eventually led to cirrhosis and liver cancer. Before his liver transplant surgery, his doctor informed him that his new liver had been regenerated using a cutting-edge machine at Montreal’s Centre hospitalier de l’Université de Montréal (CHUM).

The new technology, known as Liver Assist, enables doctors to assess and treat donated livers outside the body prior to transplantation. This process allowed Landry to receive a liver that might have otherwise been deemed too risky for transplantation.

Dr. David Hénault, a liver transplant specialist at CHUM, led the project and conducted Landry’s operation. The Liver Assist system functions by connecting a donated liver to a machine that circulates a fluid rich in oxygen through the organ, helping to reverse damage caused by oxygen deprivation. Subsequently, doctors can switch to a blood-based solution to evaluate the liver’s functionality under conditions resembling the human body.

The utilization of this technology has the potential to enhance the number of available livers for transplantation at CHUM, with projections indicating that it could benefit 20 to 24 additional patients in need of liver transplants in its initial year of use. Dr. Hénault expressed optimism about the technology’s capacity to aid more patients awaiting liver transplants and reduce complications and hospital stays for suitable candidates.

Landry’s postoperative recovery progress has been promising, with initial blood work results surpassing expectations. Dr. Hénault credited the new technology for Landry’s favorable outcome and swift recovery. As Landry continues recuperating in Montreal and anticipates returning home to Gaspésie, he emphasizes the importance of organ donation discussions, underscoring the critical role of donated organs in saving lives.

In Landry’s words, advanced technology alone cannot suffice without donated organs, emphasizing the necessity of organ donation for successful transplant outcomes.
