“British man’s Dubai dream turns nightmare”

A British man’s aspirations of a fulfilling life overseas took a drastic turn when he was imprisoned in Dubai on false drug charges. Luke Tully, aged 47, relocated from north London to Dubai in 2018 to pursue his dream of managing two successful restaurants. Initially enjoying a lavish lifestyle in the tax-free city with a monthly income exceeding £8,000, Tully’s world crumbled when law enforcement authorities apprehended him.

Despite being wrongfully detained and convicted, Tully recounted enduring two years in a harsh prison environment alongside individuals convicted of serious crimes. His troubles began when he befriended an individual who organized VIP tables at a popular nightclub in Dubai. This acquaintance brought large groups to Tully’s restaurants, establishing what Tully believed to be a genuine friendship. However, a drug-related incident involving this acquaintance led to a chain of events that implicated Tully in the eyes of the authorities.

Recalling the pivotal moment that altered his life, Tully described how the police raided his residence after finding incriminating evidence on his acquaintance. This resulted in Tully’s house being stormed just as he was preparing to attend a sports event. The sudden intrusion by plainclothes officers led Tully to initially believe he was being kidnapped. Subsequently, he faced physical violence and threats, including coerced confessions and intimidation tactics by the police.

Despite no evidence of drugs being found at his home and negative drug test results, Tully was incarcerated without a fair trial. He highlighted the deplorable conditions in Dubai’s prison system, painting a grim picture of overcrowded facilities with inadequate sanitation.

Tully’s ordeal in prison included sharing space with violent offenders, including individuals convicted of bestiality. He recounted a harrowing meeting with British embassy officials warning him of severe consequences if found guilty, only for the case against him to collapse nearly two years later. Following his deportation back to the UK, Tully expressed resilience, stating that despite the traumatic experience, he viewed it as a valuable lesson in self-discovery gained from his time in Dubai.
