The case, deemed one of the most peculiar missing persons investigations in recent times, involves the enigmatic involvement of Bigfoot as a potential suspect.
Theresa Ann Bier, a 16-year-old from Fresno, California, embarked on a journey with Russell Welch, aged 43, on June 1, 1987, supposedly in search of the elusive Bigfoot in the Sierra Nevada region. Despite planning a camping trip, Theresa never returned from the expedition.
Russell Welch, also known as Skip, quickly became a focal point of the investigation. Initially claiming he had dropped Theresa off at school, his narrative took a significant turn as he asserted they had encountered Bigfoot in the Ghost Canyon woods, leading Theresa to chase after the creature in excitement.
Extensive search efforts were launched in Ghost Canyon, spanning forests, rocks, meadows, and ridgelines, where Theresa’s belongings, including a purse, clothing fragments, photos, and personal items, were discovered at a campsite. Despite these findings, no substantial evidence or trace of Theresa ever surfaced.
Welch faced charges of child-endangerment and child-stealing, which were eventually dropped just before the trial in September 1987 due to insufficient evidence and the absence of Theresa’s remains. Detectives noted Welch’s firm belief in the existence of Bigfoot creatures and his claims of continued interactions with a tribe of such beings.
Following Welch’s death in 1998 from severe coronary artery disease at the age of 54, no credible alternate explanations for Theresa’s disappearance emerged.
