“Expert Tips: Heat Home to 18-21°C to Prevent Mold”

An expert in energy has shared the specific temperature at which you should heat your house to prevent mold growth.

Mold is a common issue that, if ignored, can lead to significant health problems. It typically develops due to excess moisture and is often found on walls and ceilings.

To prevent mold spores from thriving in your home, Ben Gallizzi from Uswitch.com suggests maintaining a temperature range between 18 and 21 degrees Celsius, as recommended by the Energy Saving Trust.

In addition, it’s crucial to ensure that your home stays above 15 degrees Celsius to avoid condensation, which occurs when warm air contacts a cold surface.

As winter approaches, energy bills are expected to rise once again. The Ofgem price cap for a standard dual fuel household paying by direct debit will increase from £1,720 to £1,755, effective from October 1 until December 31.

While the price cap sets a limit on the charges for gas and electricity units, as well as fixed standing charges, the total amount you pay for energy is still based on your actual consumption of gas and electricity.

The average electricity unit rate is going up from 25.73p per kilowatt hour (kWh) to 26.35p per kWh, with the daily standing charge increasing from 51.37p to 53.68p. On the other hand, the gas unit rate is decreasing from 6.33p per kWh to 6.29p per kWh, while the daily standing charge is rising from 29.82p to 34.03p.

The price cap serves as an estimate of the annual costs for a household with typical energy usage, based on Ofgem’s assumptions of 2,700 kWh of electricity and 11,500 kWh of gas consumption per year.

Factors such as the region you reside in can influence your energy expenses, as unit rates vary geographically. Different rates also apply to prepayment customers and those who pay upon receipt of their bill.
