A father has raised a cautionary alert to parents regarding a concealed hazard that exists in children’s water bottles following his unsettling revelation.
In a recent video shared on TikTok, Jason Sullivon, a father, disclosed that despite his regular rotation of his daughter’s reusable bottles, he encountered difficulties in ensuring they were thoroughly cleaned due to the absence of detachable parts.
Upon contacting the manufacturer, Yeti, for advice, he was instructed to boil the bottles in hot water for five to ten minutes. To his surprise, he discovered a significant accumulation of black mold around the rubber seal after following the suggested cleaning method.
Expressing his concern, he emphasized, “I reached out to Yeti to seek proper cleaning instructions since disassembling the bottles is not intended. This is how they appeared post-cleaning.”
He cautioned, “If you are using such bottles, especially for kids, it’s essential to conduct regular checks as there could be unnoticed hidden residue or contamination.”
The video has garnered over 130,000 likes on TikTok, with numerous users sharing their own experiences of dealing with mold in their water bottles in the comments section.
One disgruntled bottle owner lamented, “Many drinking bottles exhibit this issue. Finding one without it is challenging.” Another user remarked, “It’s frustrating that water bottles have numerous intricate parts, hindering effective cleaning.”
Contrarily, some users reported no problems, with a mother stating, “I disassembled my son’s 4-year-old Yeti bottle. The mold content is minimal, even after years of use. It is washed in the dishwasher 2-3 times a week, with daily straw cleaning.” Another comment noted, “Checked ours after your post, and they were in a deplorable state.”
According to UK consumer watchdog Which?, parents can prevent mold formation in children’s water bottles by strategically placing them in the dishwasher. For bottles with intricate parts, hand washing with hot water and gloves, disassembling where possible for thorough cleaning, is recommended.
Additional methods include using bottle cleaning kits with pipe cleaners or sterilizing solutions. Always adhere to the manufacturer’s washing guidelines for your specific bottle model.
