A 38-year-old married woman from Ireland is facing potential imprisonment of 18 months after being accused of sexually assaulting a teenage tourist nearly two decades younger than her during a vacation in Magaluf. The incident allegedly took place at the four-star Hotel Martinique in Magaluf on June 3, where she was arrested for touching a man’s genitals without his consent in a Turkish steam bath. Following a night in police custody, she was released on bail by an investigating magistrate.
The woman, residing in County Cork, is now charged with sexual assault for the alleged incident that occurred when she was 37 years old and the young man was 18. Prosecutors described in a three-page indictment that she sat next to him in the steam bath and, with a “lustful spirit,” touched his genitals against his will until he protested and left.
In addition to the prison term sought, prosecutors are pushing for a ban on the woman working with minors for an extended period beyond the sentence, along with court cost payments if found guilty. They also aim for her to compensate the male accuser with €500 (£440).
Reports suggest that the man was already in the hotel sauna when the woman entered, striking up a conversation with him before following him into the steam bath where the alleged assault took place. Hotel staff were alerted by the man, leading to police involvement and the woman’s subsequent arrest.
Her lawyer, Joan Arbos, had indicated plans to request the case be dropped, asserting that no crime had occurred. The trial date is yet to be scheduled, with the possibility of a suspended sentence due to the duration being under two years, a common practice in Spain for first-time offenders.
