Louvre Gallery Closure Amid Heist Fallout

The renowned Louvre museum has announced the closure of a gallery due to structural issues following a recent theft of precious jewels. The museum revealed that a technical report highlighted the fragility of certain beams on the second level of the southern wing of the Sully wing. As a precautionary measure, access to the affected area has been restricted, and employees have been temporarily relocated while experts assess the damage. Additionally, the Campana Gallery, situated below the offices, will also be closed temporarily.

The Louvre’s renovation efforts, particularly focusing on modernizing the Sully wing, have been prioritized as part of the museum’s plans announced earlier this year. The closure of the gallery comes amidst ongoing renovations at the world’s most visited museum, housed in a historic medieval palace.

The Louvre continues to grapple with the aftermath of a recent heist where crown jewels valued at over $100 million were stolen. Despite arrests made by French authorities in connection with the robbery, the jewels have yet to be recovered. Criticism has been directed at the museum’s security measures, with reports highlighting a preference for investing in new artworks and exhibitions over the maintenance and protection of the museum.

The heist took place near the iconic Mona Lisa, with intruders executing a professional operation by breaking in through a window, cutting display cases, and targeting the Apollon Gallery where the Crown Diamonds are showcased. The thieves managed to escape on motorbikes before Louvre agents could intervene, leaving behind damaged items, including the emerald-set imperial crown of Empress Eugénie. Despite the damage, efforts are underway to restore the stolen artifacts.
