“Man sentenced to 7 years for rape of student in West Cork”

A 25-year-old man named Kyle Hayes Condon from Pairc an Tobair in Clonakilty, Co Cork, has been sentenced to jail for raping a 17-year-old student whom he forcibly took to a secluded grassy area in West Cork. Condon appeared in the Central Criminal Court in Cork and admitted to charges including rape, sexual assault, assault causing harm, and false imprisonment.

The incident, as described by Detective Garda Lisa O’Sullivan, took place in the early hours of February 16 when the victim was walking home after a party. Condon began following her and engaging in conversation while she recorded a Snapchat message to capture his voice.

It was revealed that Condon was under the influence of a large amount of cocaine that night. He offered the teenager cocaine, then proceeded to grab her, drag her to a grassy area, and commit the assault despite her pleas to stop. The victim, fearing for her life, was eventually allowed to leave after twenty minutes.

Upon reaching home, the traumatized young girl disclosed the incident to her parents and sought medical assistance at a Sexual Assault Treatment Unit. She shared in a victim impact statement the emotional and physical toll the assault had taken on her, expressing feelings of fear and vulnerability.

In a letter of apology, Condon expressed remorse for his actions, admitting guilt early on and choosing not to seek bail due to shame. The court recognized his remorse, prior good behavior, and drug-related issues at the time of the offense.

Condon was sentenced to seven years in prison, with the final year suspended. He was also prohibited from contacting the victim for 40 years post-release. The judge acknowledged the severity of the crime but considered mitigating factors such as Condon’s admission of guilt and the victim’s ordeal.
