One of the national guards involved in a deliberate attack in Washington DC has passed away, as confirmed by officials. President Trump announced the death of Sarah Beckstrom, a 20-year-old female member who succumbed to her injuries. Meanwhile, Andrew Wolfe, the second National Guard member, remains in critical condition following the assault. The President shared the news during a Thanksgiving call with US service members on Thursday evening.
Sarah’s father, Gary Beckstrom, revealed to the New York Times earlier on Thursday that she had sustained a fatal wound with no chance of recovery. Governor Patrick Morrisey expressed deep sorrow over the loss, praising Sarah for her courage, resolve, and dedication to serving her state and country.
The tragic incident involved the suspected shooter, identified as Afghan national Rahmanullah Lakanwal. The FBI is currently investigating the attack as an act of terror. Lakanwal allegedly ambushed the guards near the Farragut West Metro Station in Northwest DC, firing shots that critically injured Sarah and the other guard before being apprehended.
Following the shooting, the suspect was shot multiple times and taken into custody. President Trump extended his condolences to the affected families and criticized President Biden’s immigration policies. Law enforcement officials and witnesses described the chaotic events that unfolded near the White House, with the assailant swiftly engaging the guards in gunfire.
Trump vowed that the perpetrator would face severe consequences for the attack. Additionally, immigration processes involving Afghan nationals have been halted temporarily for security reassessment. While an Afghan advocacy group condemned the violence, they emphasized that it should not lead to the mistreatment of Afghan refugees in America.
