Rapist and killer Brian David Steckel managed to communicate clearly and coherently for several minutes following the administration of a lethal injection. The 36-year-old convict, found guilty of the brutal rape and murder of 29-year-old Sandra Lee Long, spent his final moments speaking calmly to family and witnesses despite the effects of the lethal drug cocktail in his system.
Witnesses to the execution reported hearing distinct clicks from the injection device and observed convulsions, indicating a potential failure of the drugs to act as intended. Delaware officials, however, insisted that the execution proceeded as planned, attributing the extended duration to allowing Steckel to deliver his last words.
In his final statements, Steckel expressed regret and resignation, stating, “I entered here without resistance, and I accept my punishment. It’s time to depart. I love you all… I am at peace.” Steckel had been convicted of the heinous 1994 rape and murder of Sandra Lee Long in Wilmington, Delaware.
In a horrifying turn of events, Steckel enticed Long into her apartment under the guise of fixing her phone. When she rebuffed his advances, he violently attacked her, trying to strangle her with pantyhose and a sock. After assaulting her, Steckel dragged her into a bedroom, setting her and the curtains ablaze. Long succumbed to smoke inhalation and severe burns covering 60% of her body.
Following the gruesome crime, Steckel’s disturbing conduct persisted as he adopted the moniker “Driftwood Killer,” making threatening calls to a potential victim and the local newspaper. He was eventually apprehended while intoxicated on an outstanding harassment warrant, confessing to the murder the next day.
At his trial, Steckel was convicted on multiple counts of first-degree murder and sentenced to death. During the penalty phase, he urged the jurors to hold him accountable for his actions, acknowledging the selfish and despicable nature of his deeds.
