Keir Starmer has emphasized that any form of criticism towards a member of his Cabinet is entirely unacceptable, following recent reports of internal strife targeting Wes Streeting.
In his latest statement addressing the emerging briefing conflict within the government’s upper echelons, the Prime Minister commended the Health Secretary for his commendable performance. Streeting was compelled to refute allegations of orchestrating a leadership challenge against Starmer as speculations regarding the Prime Minister’s future surfaced.
During the PMQs session, Starmer lauded the Health Secretary’s efforts in reducing NHS waiting lists, although his assertion of a cohesive Cabinet was met with skepticism from the Conservative benches.
Starmer also expressed confidence in Morgan McSweeney, his chief-of-staff, and the rest of his team’s dedication to serving the nation effectively.
When questioned by Tory leader Kemi Badenoch about Streeting’s remarks on the need to reform the toxic culture in Downing Street, Starmer reiterated his commitment to national rejuvenation while unequivocally condemning any attacks on his Cabinet members.
Highlighting Streeting’s accomplishments, Starmer noted the surpassing of expectations with the delivery of five million additional appointments within the first year of a Labour government, exceeding the initial pledge of two million.
Streeting defended himself on Wednesday, dismissing the notion of a Labour leadership challenge as counterproductive and reiterated his support for the Prime Minister, likening the internal discord to a contentious reality show and denouncing the unfounded briefing as detrimental.
In an interview with Sky News, Streeting criticized the baseless briefings as unhelpful and likened the situation to a reality TV plot, emphasizing its lack of truthfulness and constructive value for the Prime Minister.
