A young woman who survived a prior school shooting shared her dismay after enduring another tragic incident at Brown University. The devastating attack resulted in two fatalities and nine injuries at one of the renowned Ivy League institutions in the US. The shooter opened fire in a classroom during pre-Christmas exams, prompting a massive manhunt involving over 400 police officers. Eventually, law enforcement apprehended a “person of interest.”
Zoe Weissman, a 20-year-old survivor of the 2018 Parkland school shooting in Florida, expressed her deep frustration at experiencing another campus tragedy. Recalling the Parkland incident where 17 individuals lost their lives to Nikolas Cruz’s gunfire, Zoe highlighted the chilling similarities between the two events.
Reflecting on the recent shooting at Brown University, Zoe conveyed her anger and shock, stating, “I’m really angry. I’m really angry that this is happening to me all over again. And I’m just in shock.” She shared her emotional regression to feeling like a teenager again amidst the distressing situation.
Describing the chaotic scene at the university, Zoe mentioned that although classes were not in session, many people were present for exams. Upon receiving a warning from a friend about the shooting, she took immediate shelter in place, staying in a classroom and updating her family on the unfolding events.
Expressing concern about the recurring occurrences of school shootings, Zoe pointed out the alarming trend of individuals surviving multiple such incidents. Blaming the US government for inaction on gun control issues, she urged Congress to pass comprehensive legislation to prevent gun violence effectively.
Following the shooting, a shelter-in-place order was enforced until early Sunday morning, with restrictions gradually being lifted as police continued their investigation at the active crime scene on campus. The university confirmed that the victims of the attack were all students at Brown University.
