A young teenager, aged 14, was reportedly confined to her bedroom and deprived of food for approximately two years while her extremely overweight family members monitored her via a webcam.
Authorities initially mistook the emaciated teenager for a child aged between six and eight years old when they discovered her in a residence in Wisconsin. The girl, who weighed only 2.5 stone, disclosed to medical personnel that she had not stepped outside since she was around ten to 12 years old. Due to her severe malnourishment, hospital staff had to resort to using a feeding tube until she could consume food independently.
Four individuals, including the girl’s father Walter Goodman, 47, who alerted emergency services, have been apprehended on multiple charges of prolonged child neglect. The other individuals facing similar accusations are Melissa Goodman, 50, the girl’s stepmother, her stepsister Savanna LeFever, 29, and LeFever’s partner Kayla Stemler, 27, all co-residing with the victim.
According to the allegations disclosed by the Daily Mirror, the young girl moved in with her father, stepmother, and stepsiblings in 2020 following her mother’s incarceration. Her interactions with her father were limited in her upbringing, but she first encountered her stepmother Melissa in 2019 while residing with her grandmother.
The girl was purportedly provided with minimal access to sustenance, water, and restroom facilities, confined in a locked room where she slept on the floor without bedding. Prosecutors claim that the adults in the household either silenced her or restricted her communication. The father mentioned using a webcam due to concerns about self-harm and attached an alarm to her door.
In a recorded conversation, Walter allegedly mentioned withholding food as punishment, stating that he would not feed her if she misbehaved. Medical professionals diagnosed the teenager with severe malnutrition and various organ dysfunctions upon her rescue.
The victim, now stable and recovering with relatives, has shown progress in her physical health. A GoFundMe campaign has been established to support her rehabilitation, garnering significant contributions to aid her recovery journey.
The accused individuals are scheduled to appear in court in the near future.
