In a video lasting over 10 minutes posted online, Greene explained her decision, citing her desire to spare her congressional district from a divisive primary contest against her supported by the former president they both backed. Greene, known for her previous alignment with MAGA, promotion of conspiracy theories, and defense of Donald Trump, gained notoriety in the UK for a contentious exchange with The News Agents’ Emily Maitlis regarding her claims about “Jewish Space Lasers” causing California wildfires.
Her resignation came after a public falling-out with Trump, where she criticized his positions on various issues such as the Epstein files, foreign policy, and healthcare. Trump publicly denounced her as a “traitor” and “wacky,” declaring his support for a challenger to her reelection bid next year. Greene confirmed her departure on January 5, 2026.
In an early morning post on Truth Social, Trump expressed satisfaction over Greene’s decision, mocking her declining poll numbers and reluctance to face a primary challenge with strong Trump backing, which he believed would lead to her defeat. He highlighted her strained relationship with Congressman Tom Massie and emphasized his refusal to engage with her calls as contributing factors to her decision. Despite the rift, Trump acknowledged Greene’s service to the country.
Greene’s departure marked a significant break in Trump’s influence over his staunch supporters, illustrating a shift away from his control over conservative circles.
