In a recently resurfaced clip, Wes Streeting expressed confidence in his potential to become Prime Minister during a 2018 interview.
The incident unfolded as the Health Secretary, who recently denied involvement in a rumored plot against Keir Starmer, participated in a segment where MPs were asked to predict the future Prime Minister in a decade. Streeting humorously responded with “I think probably me” when questioned on the matter during comedian Matt Forde’s Unspun series.
Other MPs, including Paul Sweeney, Preet Kaur Gill, Rupa Huq, and John Woodcock, had previously forecast Jeremy Corbyn as the future PM, while Conservative Tim Loughton suggested Kemi Badenoch. Streeting’s lighthearted remark resurfaced amidst denials of his involvement in a coup against Starmer and escalating speculation surrounding the Prime Minister’s position.
Amidst the turmoil, Streeting criticized derogatory remarks made against Labour MPs and emphasized the need for unity within the party. He asserted that those attempting to undermine the government’s efforts were acting against the party’s interests and expressed his unwavering support for the Prime Minister.
Comparing the internal conflicts to a reality TV show, Streeting likened the situation to an episode of Celebrity Traitors, highlighting the challenges faced by loyal members. He reiterated his backing of the Prime Minister amidst a backdrop of tensions within the party.
During a session of PMQs, Starmer commended Streeting’s efforts in reducing NHS waiting lists, although facing ridicule from opposition members claiming disunity within the Cabinet. Streeting’s achievements in delivering healthcare improvements under the Labour government were acknowledged, surpassing initial expectations.
