Researchers in Alberta are keeping a close eye on blue-green algae, and a new website now allows the public to monitor the situation easily from anywhere. The Algal Bloom Tracker lets users track toxic algal blooms in six lakes using satellite images and lake sampling, providing near real-time results on a user-friendly map. Rolf Vinebrooke, a key researcher, explained that the map is regularly updated with satellite images capturing the lakes’ conditions. This technology offers a comprehensive view of the blooms, assisting in identifying areas to avoid.
Blue-green algae, also known as cyanobacteria, can rapidly multiply in nutrient-rich Alberta lakes during the summer, posing health risks due to potential toxin production. Vinebrook highlighted the dynamic nature of these blooms, emphasizing the need for close monitoring, which satellites facilitate more effectively than traditional methods.
The Algal Bloom Tracker’s current prototype covers six lakes popular for outdoor activities, with plans to expand to around 50 lakes in Alberta over the next three years. Health advisories are issued by Alberta Health Services when blue-green algae levels are deemed excessive, with over 25 advisories currently active across the province. The tracker aims to provide essential information for public safety and informed decision-making regarding lake activities.
