Residents of approximately 2,400 households near the Quilpituk Creek wildfire area in the Central Okanagan region received positive news on Friday. The evacuation orders for properties from Cinnabar Creek to Westshore Estates have been downgraded to alerts, allowing them to return home. This staged re-entry process was implemented to avoid traffic congestion.
The B.C. Wildfire Service reported that the fire is currently “being held,” indicating that it is not expected to spread further. Fortunately, no structures have been lost in the fire, which has been active for about two weeks and has affected over 1,200 hectares of land.
Despite the improved situation, challenges persist. Residents returning home should be prepared for ash, soot, smoke residue, and debris on their properties and roads. Kari O’Rourke advised bringing potable water and cleaning supplies to be self-sufficient for at least 72 hours.
James Britton, a resident of La Casa Lakeside Resort, shared his experience of returning home after his third evacuation in six years. While grateful that his property remained intact, he acknowledged the recurring threat of wildfires in the area, prompting him to reconsider living there.
Community spirit was evident as neighbors supported each other during the evacuation. For instance, volunteers helped clear out refrigerators, despite the challenge of spoiled food due to power outages. Businesses like La Casa Market & Kitchen faced losses but remained resilient in their recovery efforts.
In a separate development, evacuation orders have been eased for Peachland evacuees, allowing them to return home. Summerland Mayor Doug Holmes mentioned plans to gradually permit other affected neighborhoods to re-enter their homes in the coming days.
Although some evacuees are now able to return, evacuation alerts are still active in certain areas. Authorities emphasize the importance of staying vigilant and being prepared to evacuate immediately if conditions worsen.
