The inaugural Ontario Honda Dealers Indy at Markham encountered a setback at the starting line. The first day of practice and qualifying for the only IndyCar event in Canada had to be canceled on Friday due to incomplete track construction, leading to a delay in the final safety check by officials. Organizers have planned to reschedule all the missed track sessions from the first day to Saturday’s agenda.
This year marks Markham’s debut as the host city for the event, following its relocation from Toronto’s Exhibition Place, where it had been held since its inception in 1986. IndyCar president J. Douglas Boles expressed disappointment over the track build delay, despite substantial on-site support from their team. He acknowledged the strong support of fans in Ontario and apologized for the logistical challenges faced in organizing the new event.
Long-time race attendees Mark Coburn of Kitchener, Ont., and Scott Stobo of Waterloo, Ont., shared their mixed feelings about the postponed practice and qualifying sessions. Coburn emphasized the importance of safety in motorsports, understanding the necessity for a secure track to prevent accidents and maintain the event’s integrity. Stobo highlighted the lack of on-track action throughout the day, noting its significance in attracting both existing and potential fans.
The decision to move the event from downtown Toronto to Markham was announced by IndyCar and the City of Markham in September, with the temporary circuit constructed for the first time this week. However, some essential features, such as a pedestrian bridge and safety fencing adjustments, were left incomplete, leading to concerns among attendees like Stobo regarding the event’s location in an industrial park.
Government investments totaling $5 million were made to support the Indy event, with significant capital spending by Markham exceeding $12 million. Friday’s race attendance was high, with spectators enjoying activities both on and off the track, despite challenges like limited shade and seating options compared to the previous venue at Exhibition Place.
Saturday’s schedule promises a packed day of activities, including practice sessions, qualifying rounds, and various races around the road course. IndyCar officials are optimistic about the track’s potential and are grateful for Markham’s support in creating a fast and exciting layout for the upcoming races. Additionally, other racing series like USF2000 Championship, USF Pro 2000, Radical Cup Canada, and NASCAR Canada Series will also be featured during the weekend event.
Stobo expressed contentment with the overall experience but indicated that they might not return for future events following the challenges faced during this year’s Indy at Markham.
