A global coalition of soccer supporter groups initiated a petition on Thursday urging Gianni Infantino to step down as FIFA president following his proposal to offer future World Cup revenues to private investors. The petition, tagged as InfantinOut, also demands a reconstruction of FIFA to prevent similar controversies in the future.
The petition condemned Infantino’s unsuccessful endeavor to commercialize the World Cup, labeling it as a disgraceful act that betrayed the essence of football. This scheme was quickly abandoned after facing severe backlash from the soccer community. Notable groups involved in the petition include Football Supporters Europe, Football Supporters Africa, the Independent Supporters Council in North America, and approximately 40 other national fan associations globally.
Despite facing widespread criticism and a vote of no confidence from UEFA, Infantino has refused to resign. The petition accuses him of a significant leadership failure and asserts that the governance under his tenure lacks transparency, accountability, and democratic principles. It stresses the urgent need for Infantino to step down for the credibility of FIFA and the integrity of the sport.
