In recent months, concerns arose regarding the much-anticipated opening of the Gordie Howe International Bridge, leading to the privately-owned Ambassador Bridge making aggressive efforts to retain trucking companies’ business along the Detroit River. The Ontario Trucking Association’s Director of Policy, Lak Shoan, mentioned that they were informed by some members about the Ambassador Bridge’s outreach activities in spring. Several Canadian trucking companies with cross-border operations were contacted by CBC Windsor to inquire about toll rate offers from the Ambassador Bridge, but responses were limited. A U.S. trucking union official advised against using the new crossing due to substantial toll savings under their current contract with the Ambassador Bridge.
Toll rates and revenue played a significant role in the political saga surrounding the opening of the $6.4 billion Gordie Howe bridge, fully funded by the Canadian government. The Moroun family, owners of the Ambassador Bridge since 1979, intensified their political influence efforts before former U.S. President Donald Trump’s intervention threatened to delay the new crossing’s opening. Despite the delay, the Gordie Howe bridge eventually commenced operations in late July.
Allegations have been made accusing Trump of favoring the Morouns by obstructing the new bridge’s opening. The Ambassador Bridge’s representatives did not provide comments, but their website indicated the availability of a more cost-effective toll program for specific trucking companies. The trucking association acknowledged the competitive dynamics between the bridges, potentially leading to reduced toll expenses for trucking firms.
The Ambassador Bridge’s contract details with companies were not disclosed. However, the UAW Local 212 Chair shared specific financial information related to their agreement. Stellantis, the parent company, emphasized the importance of the Gordie Howe International Bridge in enhancing border crossing efficiency. Shoan highlighted the appeal of deals offered by the Ambassador Bridge amid uncertainties surrounding the Gordie Howe bridge’s opening, particularly during economically turbulent times.
