Igor Shesterkin made NHL history by scoring a goal for the New York Rangers in a 5-1 win over Tampa Bay in New York City. Shesterkin, the 18th goaltender ever to achieve this milestone, shot the puck into an empty net with 2:34 remaining in the game. His teammates mobbed him in celebration, and fans at Madison Square Garden chanted his name, “Igor! Igor!”
This marked Shesterkin’s first career goal and the 21st goalie goal overall, including playoffs. The Rangers’ goalie is the sole player from the team to have accomplished this feat. Lightning coach Jon Cooper provided Shesterkin with the opportunity to score by pulling Andrei Vasilevskiy for an extra attacker during the game.
In addition to his historic goal, Shesterkin displayed stellar performance in the net, saving 24 out of 25 shots he faced. His outstanding performance earned him the first star of the game accolade.
