Shapovalov Advances to Japan Open Quarterfinals

Canadian tennis player Denis Shapovalov secured a spot in the quarterfinals of the Japan Open tournament.

Shapovalov emerged victorious in a hard-fought match against Alejandro Tabilo from Chile in Tokyo, winning in three sets with scores of 7-5, 3-6, 6-4 on Saturday.

Hailing from Richmond Hill, Ontario, the 27-year-old athlete boosted his season record to 20 wins and 19 losses with this triumph. His upcoming match will be against Spain’s Carlos Alcaraz on Sunday.

On the same day, top-seeded Carlos Alcaraz defeated Matteo Arnaldi with a score of 7-6 (6), 6-1, marking his successful return to the game following a four-month hiatus due to a wrist injury.

Alcaraz recently participated in the Laver Cup, contributing to Europe’s victory in the tournament by securing a singles win against Taylor Fritz. His return from injury was marked by a dramatic loss to Ben Shelton in the U.S. Open quarterfinals.

Rybakina eliminated from China Open, Zverev to clash with Djokovic

Elena Rybakina, the top-ranked player, was knocked out of the China Open by Alina Charaeva, ranked 118th, in the second round. Charaeva claimed victory with a score of 3-6, 6-4, 6-3 on Saturday.

Expressing her astonishment, Charaeva revealed, “I kept myself mentally strong and maintained hope that I could turn the match in my favor. I never lost faith.” She became only the ninth female player outside the top 100 to defeat a world No. 1.

Rybakina struggled with seven double faults and lost her serve five times, including the crucial moment where she fell behind 4-2 in the third set.

Following her recent U.S. Open victory, Rybakina faced difficulties and attributed her loss to the lack of rest after the tournament. She congratulated Charaeva on her exceptional performance.

Meanwhile, Coco Gauff, who previously lost to Rybakina in the U.S. Open semifinals, secured a victory against Camila Osorio with a score of 7-6 (4), 4-6, 6-2.

In the men’s event, top seed and U.S. Open champion Alexander Zverev defeated wild card Shang Juncheng with scores of 6-0, 6-3, setting up a quarterfinal clash against Novak Djokovic.

Third-seeded Daniil Medvedev progressed to the next round by defeating Jan-Lennard Struff with scores of 6-4, 6-3.
