“Canadian Coach Calls for Action Against Man City”

Canadian men’s soccer coach Jesse Marsch has urged for strict repercussions against Manchester City for violating Premier League financial regulations. Marsch, who previously managed against the club, expressed his belief in the inconsistencies within City’s operations.

Manchester City was found to have committed serious breaches of Premier League financial rules spanning nine seasons from 2009-10 to 2017-18. The league accused the club of using deceptive commercial contracts to inflate revenue and underreport costs by over 900 million pounds ($1.19 billion US).

City has refuted the allegations, claiming errors in law, principle, and fact in the verdict, and has lodged an appeal against the ruling by the independent commission.

During his tenure in England, Marsch, who led Leeds United from 2022 to 2023, noticed a significant gap between the clubs. In an interview with the Guardian, Marsch emphasized the need for severe punishment for Manchester City, stating that the knowledge of their actions was widespread.

Marsch highlighted the 2022 summer transfer window, citing Leeds’ profitable sales of Raphinha to Barcelona and Kalvin Phillips to City while maintaining financial stability. In contrast, Marsch questioned City’s financial transactions, including the acquisition of Erling Haaland from Borussia Dortmund for £52m.

Reuters has reached out to Manchester City for their response to Marsch’s comments. The club’s appeal will be reviewed by an independent three-member board, with potential penalties such as fines, point deductions, and even relegation or title-stripping being considered. The timeline for any sanctions remains uncertain pending the appeal decision.
