“Free TV Licences Available for Over-75s on Pension Credit”

Thousands of individuals born in 1950 may qualify for a complimentary TV licence starting this year. If you are 75 years or older and receive Pension Credit, you are eligible for a free TV licence, now priced at £174.50. Upon turning 75 and being a Pension Credit claimant, you can request a refund for any remaining months on your TV licence post your 75th birthday, provided you have at least one month left on the licence to apply for a refund.

A TV licence is necessary for watching or recording live TV or any content, whether live or catch-up, on BBC iPlayer. However, if you only view programs on catch-up through non-BBC iPlayer streaming services like Netflix, Amazon Prime, ITVX, Disney Plus, YouTube, All 4, or My5, a TV licence is not required. Yet, if you watch live TV shows via these streaming platforms, a TV licence is mandatory.

Failure to possess a TV licence could lead to fines up to £1,000, or £2,000 in Guernsey. It’s estimated that around 800,000 eligible households miss out on Pension Credit yearly, a scheme aimed at boosting weekly income. The primary part of Pension Credit, known as “Guarantee Credit,” augments weekly income to £227.10 for singles and £346.60 for couples.

To qualify, your income should usually fall below these thresholds, although exceptions exist for higher-income individuals with disabilities, caregivers, or housing costs. Additional benefits under Pension Credit include financial aid for carers, disabled individuals, and parents. The “Savings Credit” component benefits those who reached state pension age before April 2016, offering up to £17.30 weekly for singles and £19.36 for couples.

Pension Credit opens doors to further financial assistance, such as free dental care and eyewear vouchers, with an average annual award exceeding £3,900. Eligible individuals can apply for Pension Credit on GOV.UK, by dialing 0800 99 1234, or by completing a paper application form. Applications can be submitted up to four months before reaching state pension age.
