Shabana Mahmood is preparing to unveil significant changes to the immigration regulations in the UK, taking inspiration from Denmark’s policies. The Home Secretary recently sent officials to Denmark to examine their stringent border controls and asylum measures, known for being some of the most rigorous in Europe.
Denmark’s strategies, such as stricter rules on family reunions and temporary stays for certain refugees, are under review. These measures have led to a notable decrease in asylum applications, the lowest in four decades, and a high success rate in removing 95% of rejected asylum seekers. While some Labour MPs support these tougher measures to counter Reform UK, others fear losing voter support to the Greens and Liberal Democrats.
Shabana Mahmood aims to deter unauthorized entry into the UK while streamlining the process of deporting individuals without legal rights to stay. She is eager to meet with Denmark’s Immigration Minister, Rasmus Stoklund, to discuss further collaboration.
Rasmus Stoklund has likened Danish society to the peaceful hobbits in “The Lord of the Rings,” emphasizing the expectation for newcomers to contribute positively. Labour MP Gareth Snell expressed interest in exploring changes that enhance fairness in the asylum system, while MP Nadia Whittome cautioned against adopting what she views as far-right policies.
Recent data from the Home Office shows that 648 migrants arrived in the UK from Channel crossings on Friday, bringing the total for the year to 38,223.
