The UK faced criticism from the Russian foreign minister who labeled the country’s military and nuclear capabilities as inadequate. Sergei Lavrov, aged 75, reappeared after a period of absence, during which he was rumored to have been sidelined by Vladimir Putin due to failed diplomatic arrangements with Donald Trump. Lavrov’s return included scathing remarks towards the UK, which the Kremlin views as a primary adversary for aligning Western support with Ukraine.
According to Lavrov, the UK’s former imperial power has waned, along with its economic and military strength, including its nuclear arsenal. He insinuated that the UK compensates for these shortcomings by employing divisive tactics and questionable behaviors to achieve its objectives. Lavrov also criticized alleged plots involving Ukrainian intelligence and MI6, accusing London of instigating provocations against Russia.
On a separate note, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy expressed the urgent need to acquire 25 Patriot air defense systems from the US to counter ongoing Russian aerial assaults causing severe disruptions in Ukraine. Zelensky acknowledged the cost and time required for such an acquisition but suggested the possibility of European countries loaning their Patriot systems to Ukraine temporarily. This request comes amidst escalating tensions and the imminent approach of winter in Ukraine.
