“Over 90 Inmates Mistakenly Released, 3 Missing: Government’s Urgent Response”

Downing Street has acknowledged the alarming revelation that over 90 inmates have been mistakenly released since April this year. Additionally, a new case has surfaced where an offender may be on the run after a release error. Deputy Prime Minister and Justice Secretary David Lammy disclosed that three prisoners are currently missing due to erroneous releases, and there is an ongoing investigation into another potential release mistake on November 3.

The Ministry of Justice (MoJ) recently published data indicating that 91 criminals were erroneously freed between April 1 and October 31 this year. A No 10 spokesperson emphasized that these incidents highlight the challenges inherited by the government in a strained prison system and a deficient criminal justice system. They acknowledged the public’s shock over these cases, highlighting an increase in such errors from an average of nine per month in 2023 to 17 per month in the following year.

To address the situation, David Lammy announced a £10 million initiative to implement AI-powered tools for frontline staff, enabling accurate sentence calculations and upgrades to outdated paper-based systems. An urgent independent review has also been ordered to analyze the surge in release errors. The MoJ noted that prison staff, already facing significant pressure, have to navigate through extensive guidance documents, increasing the likelihood of mistakes.

The issue of mistaken prisoner releases gained attention following the well-known incident involving Hadush Kebatu, a deported migrant at the center of protests in Epping, Essex. In a statement to the Commons, David Lammy stressed the need for a comprehensive overhaul of the prison release service, expressing a profound apology to victims affected by the release of their offenders in error. He underscored the challenges within an underfunded and understaffed prison system operating under immense strain, emphasizing the imperative to reduce such errors indicative of a severely strained prison system.

Official statistics revealed that around 800 prisoners were erroneously released during the Conservative administration, with the number escalating annually and peaking at 115 in 2023/24. Under the Labour government in 2024/25, the incorrect release count surged to 262, partly attributed to Labour’s early release program necessitated by the precarious state of the justice system inherited. David Lammy defended proposals to release women offenders into the community, emphasizing the need to consider alternative approaches, especially for those who are mothers.
