Steve Teatum, the Head of Group Loss Prevention at Next, discussed the system in a recent episode of the Retail Crime Uncovered podcast.
Teatum highlighted the effectiveness of the Thruvision system in uncovering individuals attempting to conceal stolen goods within personal body areas, a practice referred to as “Mules.” Despite attempts to deceive traditional security measures, the technology has proven instrumental in detecting hidden items, significantly reducing theft incidents.
In response to the rising trend of shoplifting in England and Wales, which reached a record high in over two decades, retailers are exploring advanced solutions to combat theft. Home Bargains, for instance, has adopted AI cameras in self-checkouts to identify unscanned items, collaborating with tech companies like SAI and Everseen for enhanced security measures.
The AI technology at Home Bargains is designed to flag instances of “misscans” and “skip scans” at self-checkout counters, alerting staff to potential theft. Operations director Paul Rowland noted the effectiveness of technology compared to traditional security methods, emphasizing the retailer’s commitment to curbing retail crime.
These initiatives come in light of increased retail crime rates, prompting retailers to adopt proactive measures to safeguard against theft and enhance security protocols. In addition to technological advancements, retailers are also encouraging customer participation in reporting suspicious activities, underscoring a collective effort to maintain a secure shopping environment.
