“Labour Deputy Leader Calls for Culture Shift”

The Deputy Leader of the Labour Party has strongly criticized the practice of making negative personal comments in private briefings as completely inappropriate. In the midst of escalating briefings against Keir Starmer’s leadership, Lucy Powell emphasized the need for a significant shift in the political culture. She highlighted the detrimental impact of such behavior on the quality of politics and politicians, stressing the importance of accountability for those involved.

Powell also pointed out a potential element of sexism in the briefings targeting her during the deputy leadership race, where she emerged victorious over Education Secretary Bridget Phillipson. Reflecting on her dismissal as Leader of the Commons by the Prime Minister, Powell expressed her concerns upon learning about issues faced by Angela Rayner related to stamp duty.

Recalling the phone call that led to her removal, Powell admitted to sensing the impending decision due to her prior outspokenness and delivery of tough messages. Despite feeling that she had performed well in her role, she understood the implications of a withheld call from Downing Street.

A month into her tenure as Deputy Leader, Powell mentioned her improved understanding of people’s priorities and the necessity to clearly communicate Labour values and the essence of the Labour government. She emphasized the importance of fulfilling the fundamental expectations of governance and addressing issues such as border security and immigration control.
