“Business Secretary Warns of Farage’s Echoes of Enoch Powell”

Business Secretary Peter Kyle has accused Nigel Farage of embodying the political ideology of Enoch Powell in today’s context. Kyle criticized the Reform UK leader during a speech at the Co-operative Party conference, emphasizing the importance of achieving sustained economic growth to rebuild trust in governance and democracy. He warned that a lack of economic progress could fuel support for far-right parties like Reform UK, drawing parallels to past groups such as the National Front and the British National Party. Kyle highlighted Farage as a contemporary representation of Enoch Powell’s politics, referencing Powell’s controversial “rivers of blood” speech in 1968. This isn’t the first time Kyle has clashed with Farage, previously challenging him on his stance against the Government’s Online Safety Act. The Communities Secretary, Steve Reed, also addressed the conference, stressing the need to unite communities and overcome divisive political influences like Reform UK. Reed emphasized the shared goal of enhancing local communities for collective success.
