“UK Transitioning to Full Fibre: Stop Sell Alerts Impact 1.2M Properties”

The transition in the UK from outdated copper phone and broadband lines to advanced full fibre technology is gaining momentum. Millions have already made the switch to this improved connectivity, and more households are set to move away from copper cables soon.

BT’s Openreach has confirmed that 1.2 million properties will be impacted by the “Stop Sell” alerts, with 132 new locations added to the list of areas reaching the end of their copper service life.

The Stop Sell initiative restricts internet service providers like BT, Sky, TalkTalk, and Vodafone from offering traditional copper-based phone and broadband services in areas where full fibre is accessible. New and renewing customers will now be required to opt for fibre broadband and Digital Voice for landline services, gradually replacing traditional landlines.

Although concerns have been raised by some older and vulnerable customers regarding the transition, Digital Voice promises enhanced call quality, spam call blocking, and call diversion to mobile phones. Customers without access to full fibre can continue using their copper-based services until fibre is accessible in their region.

Openreach emphasizes that the Stop Sell program is crucial for pushing the UK towards a modern full fibre future. By phasing out legacy copper services in fibre-ready regions, the transition to faster, more reliable digital infrastructure is facilitated, reducing operational costs and supporting the industry-wide shift towards the impending shutdown of the old PSTN phone network.

To verify service availability in your area, you can use the Openreach postcode checker to determine if full fibre has been deployed in your vicinity. Here is the updated list of locations affected by the Stop Sell alerts, signaling the shift towards full fibre technology.
