A 73-year-old man tragically passed away after falling off the Disney Wonder cruise ship over the weekend. The man, a resident of Melbourne, is believed to have fallen overboard while the ship was en route to Auckland. Despite a thorough search by the crew lasting approximately five hours, the man could not be located, leading to the ship being turned back in the Tasman Sea for search and rescue operations using thermal imaging cameras.
The incident occurred around 4:30 am, with passengers only becoming aware of the situation hours later at noon. One passenger, Mitch Talbot, recounted the captain’s announcement about the passenger falling overboard and the unsuccessful search efforts, creating a somber atmosphere onboard for the remainder of the day.
Victoria Police confirmed that the man’s body had not been found as of Sunday and stated that the death was not considered suspicious. The Disney Wonder has resumed its voyage, with passengers expected to arrive in New Zealand on Wednesday, a day later than originally planned. The ship can accommodate up to 1,750 passengers across its 11 decks.
Further information has been requested from Victoria Police by the Mirror for additional details on the incident.
