Jessica Pegula, known as one of the wealthiest figures in the tennis world, has suggested that Andy Murray may have taken on the role of Novak Djokovic’s coach out of sheer curiosity. Shortly after retiring in the summer of 2024, Murray surprised the tennis community by announcing his decision to coach the 24-time Grand Slam champion.
The two tennis icons teamed up before the Australian Open, where Djokovic reached the semi-finals before withdrawing due to an injury. In May, it was confirmed that their coaching partnership had ended mutually after just six months.
During an episode of The Players Box podcast with Jennifer Brady, Desirae Krawczyk, and Madison Keys, Pegula, who has a net worth of nearly £15 million and stands to inherit a £5.5 billion fortune, suggested that Murray might have been intrigued by the opportunity to gain insights into Djokovic’s mindset.
Pegula remarked, “I think he was so interested. I think he thought, ‘This is so strange, I’m so curious. Why do you want me to coach you but I’m also so interested in how your brain works and how you’re thinking out there’. And I definitely saw them out there.”
Keys also commented on the unique partnership, supporting Pegula’s view that Murray likely saw the collaboration as a chance to understand Djokovic’s competitive edge.
Despite parting ways, both Murray and Djokovic have shared their perspectives on their coaching relationship. Murray revealed that he saw the opportunity as unique and decided to give coaching a try. Djokovic expressed gratitude for the experience and acknowledged that the collaboration didn’t yield the desired results.
Their split was amicable, with Djokovic emphasizing the valuable insights he gained from Murray and expressing respect for his former coach’s tennis acumen. Djokovic hinted at future collaborations, highlighting Murray’s exceptional tennis knowledge and the potential benefits for any player fortunate enough to work with him.
