“Iceland Manifesto Unveiled: Cost of Living Concerns Addressed”

When engaging with residents in various locations, a common concern that arises is the burden of maintaining a decent standard of living.

This issue holds personal significance for me, as I have actively advocated for changes such as making infant formula more accessible to new parents and aiding families in avoiding exploitative loan practices.

In the previous year, I embarked on a nationwide journey, engaging with our dedicated workforce of 30,000 individuals at Iceland and our five million weekly customers. Our insights were consolidated into the ‘Iceland Manifesto,’ which we released just before the last general election.

Our research revealed a prevailing sentiment of disenfranchisement among the populace towards policymakers, coupled with ongoing struggles concerning the affordability of essentials ranging from childcare and veterinary expenses to heating and food. These concerns persist, highlighting the pressing need for action, as the cost of living continues to dominate people’s daily worries.

My decision to accept a position as a Labour peer stems from a desire to inject practical insights from the high street into the corridors of power in Westminster, amplifying the voices of businesses and communities nationwide that we serve. I hold great respect for the expertise within the House of Lords and the caliber of discussions that take place there.

It is a moment of pride to be entrusted with the task of sharing my experiences as a retailer and entrepreneur. I aim to provide a unique perspective, drawing from my leadership in a family-owned enterprise that provides employment for many and offers affordable, high-quality food to millions.

I comprehend the challenges that businesses encounter in meeting payroll obligations and the struggles faced by families in ensuring regular access to nutritious meals. As an entrepreneur, I also appreciate the drive that compels individuals to take risks for their ideas.

The current Labour administration has prioritized fostering economic growth and committed to removing impediments that hinder it. Ultimately, sustainable growth hinges on private enterprise, necessitating a conducive environment for investment and a regulatory framework that supports business stability.

I maintain the belief that Westminster does not hold all the solutions, but it functions more effectively when those directly involved step forward and communicate candidly. In my new capacity, I vow to uphold this ethos.
