Spain and Italy will compete in the final of the prestigious Davis Cup on Sunday. Earlier in the year, the competition faced controversy when Zizou Bergs and Cristian Garin clashed on the court during a match between Belgium and Chile in the tournament’s first qualifying round in February.
The incident occurred when Bergs knocked Garin to the ground while celebrating a break of serve, leading Garin to stop playing despite being examined by a doctor. As a result, Garin received penalties, and Belgium was declared the winner.
Garin criticized the decision to continue the match, especially after Bergs took the lead in the third set. The collision between Bergs and Garin led to Garin receiving time violation penalties, ultimately resulting in Belgium securing a 3-1 victory.
Following the match, Garin expressed disappointment with the disqualification and criticized the ITF’s handling of the situation. Bergs received a code violation for unsportsmanlike conduct, with the umpire acknowledging the incident as an unfortunate accident.
Bergs explained that the collision was unintentional, expressing regret for the outcome and apologizing to Garin and his team. Despite the controversy, the Davis Cup final between Spain and Italy is set to take place as scheduled.
