“Former Reform UK Leader Jailed for Russian Bribery”

A former leader of Reform UK in Wales and a former close associate of Nigel Farage has been sentenced to prison for accepting bribes from Russia during his time in the European Parliament.

Nathan Gill, 52, confessed to eight bribery charges, receiving money from Oleg Voloshyn, a figure linked to the Russian security services, to deliver scripted speeches and promote pro-Russian views on television while serving as a Member of the European Parliament (MEP). The court heard that counter terrorism officers uncovered incriminating WhatsApp messages between Gill and Voloshyn, revealing their illicit activities after Gill was detained at Manchester Airport in 2021.

Sentencing Gill to 10-and-a-half years in prison, Judge Mrs. Justice Cheema-Grubb condemned his actions as a “serious betrayal” of the trust placed in him by his constituents. She criticized Gill for abusing his authoritative position for personal financial and political gain, tarnishing the integrity of the European Parliament in its interactions with Russia.

Furthermore, Gill was found to have promised to bring his Brexit Party colleagues to a meeting with Victor Medvedchuk, an ally of Vladimir Putin, whom he publicly supported. In response to the scandal, Liberal Democrat leader Sir Ed Davey labeled Gill a traitor and called for a thorough investigation into Russian interference in British politics.

Security Minister Dan Jarvis denounced Gill’s actions as a betrayal of national security, emphasizing the government’s commitment to combating foreign influence in the UK. A spokesperson for Reform UK expressed relief that justice had been served and condemned Gill’s behavior as treacherous and unforgivable.

Despite the defense’s acknowledgment of Gill’s guilt and remorse, the court highlighted the severity of his offenses, emphasizing the clandestine nature of his financial transactions with foreign entities. Gill, who previously held positions in UKIP and the Brexit Party, had a history of supporting Russian interests, including defending TV channels linked to Putin ally Viktor Medvedchuk. The court also noted Gill’s role in facilitating MEP engagements with pro-Russian media outlets, implicating him in a wider network of illicit activities.

Commander Dominic Murphy of the Metropolitan Police’s counter terrorism command underscored the seriousness of the case, warning against any attempts to compromise democratic values or national security. The investigation into Gill’s misconduct shed light on the risks posed by individuals exploiting their political positions for personal gain and foreign interests.
