Growing up in challenging circumstances in the East End, with limited resources and support, I understand the struggles many children face. Despite the adversity, I had the encouragement of dedicated teachers and the presence of family members nearby, which propelled me to overcome the obstacles and eventually reach a position at the Cabinet table.
Presently, the statistics concerning children’s health are alarming, with a rise in obesity rates among young children and dental issues being the primary reason for hospital visits. The most disadvantaged children are bearing the brunt of poor living conditions, inadequate nutrition, unstable housing situations, and hunger.
It is critical to consider the future we are shaping for these children by allowing such conditions to persist. To address these pressing concerns, I am pleased to announce a significant step in promoting children’s health by extending the soft drinks industry levy to include sugary milkshakes, flavored milks, and milk substitutes.
The primary goal of this initiative is to assist children in shedding excess weight rather than generating revenue. The effectiveness of the original levy is evident, as sugar consumption from soft drinks has decreased significantly, leading to a reduction in the number of children requiring dental interventions.
While acknowledging the positive impact of past efforts, it is essential to continue prioritizing public health initiatives over other political agendas. Labour remains steadfast in its commitment to enhancing children’s health, with the latest measure projected to eliminate millions of calories from children’s daily diets and reduce obesity cases substantially.
This step is part of a comprehensive strategy to combat obesity and child poverty, including initiatives like providing breakfast clubs, expanding free school meals, prohibiting junk food advertisements, regulating youth vaping, and improving air quality for our youth.
Every child deserves access to quality healthcare, regardless of their family’s financial status. Labour is dedicated to leveling the playing field and ensuring that every child has an equal opportunity to thrive and lead a healthy life.
