Meg Whitton, a resident of Simcoe County in southern Ontario, shared her unique experience at the local dump. While visiting the dump one Saturday to dispose of an old broom, Whitton came across two weathered Cedar Muskoka chairs that caught her eye. Despite the prohibition on taking items from the dump, she decided to rescue the chairs and bring them home for her backyard.
Thrilled with her find, Whitton shared her story on Twitter, only to discover that the chairs had been discarded by someone who had enjoyed them for 20 years at their cottage. With a little repair work by her partner, the chairs were as good as new, solidifying Whitton’s appreciation for the dump’s hidden treasures.
Inspired by her experience, Whitton later took on a part-time job at the dump, working every Saturday from April to November. Initially expecting to guide visitors on sorting their items, she was surprised by the personal stories shared by people disposing of their belongings.
From faulty coasters to sentimental possessions like a late mother’s paints, Whitton witnessed a variety of items being discarded, including almost-new items that puzzled her. One encounter with Freddy, who disposed of unsellable donations for a charity, made her reflect on her own donation habits and feelings of guilt.
As Whitton struggles to find a new home for a Paw Patrol fire engine toy that her children have outgrown, she questions the societal norms of acquiring and discarding possessions without considering the reasons behind their purchase.
With changing donation policies and shifting attitudes towards decluttering, Whitton’s experiences at the dump shed light on the complex emotions and stories attached to the items we discard and the importance of mindful consumption.
