Valeria Vecchio was out for a stroll with her dog Clifford in a downtown Edmonton park when she observed unusual behavior in her furry companion. Clifford, a one-year-old mixed breed of poodle and Cavalier King Charles spaniel, suddenly became lethargic, displayed signs of distress like white gums and vomiting, and refused to walk any further. Concerned, Vecchio carried him back from Railtown Park, located near the High Level Bridge, suspecting that he might have ingested something harmful.
As Clifford’s condition worsened, with shallow breathing and a slowed heart rate, Vecchio rushed him to the vet in an Uber, anxiously trying to keep him awake during the journey. At the animal hospital, the veterinarian suggested that Clifford might be experiencing opioid toxicity. After receiving naloxone treatment, Clifford recovered fully.
Vecchio mentioned that the vet’s diagnosis didn’t surprise her, considering the prevalence of open drug use in public spaces in downtown Edmonton. Dr. Jami Frederick, the president of the Alberta Veterinary Medical Association, and an emergency vet, commented that opioid ingestion cases in pets, though less frequent than marijuana exposure, are on the rise, especially during the summer months when people walk their pets in public areas more frequently.
Dr. Frederick recommended that pet owners carry naloxone kits when out with their pets and seek immediate veterinary help if opioid poisoning is suspected. She highlighted the importance of monitoring pets closely and administering additional naloxone doses if needed, as the effects of opioids can outlast the medication’s effectiveness.
The City of Edmonton, responding to the incident, stated that it couldn’t confirm if the issue was reported formally but emphasized regular cleaning of public spaces to address litter concerns. Vecchio expressed her intention to be more cautious about where she and Clifford walk, avoiding areas with potential drug exposure risks.
Concerned for Clifford’s safety, Vecchio pledged to vigilantly monitor his activities and surroundings, emphasizing the deep bond she shares with her beloved pet.
