“Aldi Slashes Prices on 900+ Items, Plans New Store Openings”

Aldi has announced a reduction in prices for over 900 products in recent months. The supermarket disclosed that it has allocated more than £300 million towards price cuts since the beginning of 2025, covering items like fresh produce, baked goods, dairy, and essential household goods.

Julie Ashfield, Chief Commercial Officer at Aldi UK, emphasized the impact of rising inflation on consumer spending habits. She stated, “We’ve already committed over £300 million to lowering prices this year to ensure our customers receive exceptional value. We understand the significance of competitive pricing for our customers, especially during the festive season, and we are dedicated to providing substantial savings compared to other major supermarkets.”

Which? recently recognized Aldi as the most economical supermarket for the month, with a basket of 75 items averaging £127.92 in August 2025. This was slightly cheaper than Lidl’s £128.30 with its loyalty program, Lidl Plus. The shopping list included both branded and own-label products such as Birds Eye Peas, Hovis bread, milk, and butter.

In comparison, Tesco Clubcard members spent an average of £142.36, while non-members paid £145.01. Sainsbury’s Nectar card holders’ expenditure averaged £144.75, whereas those without a Nectar card paid £149.02.

Aldi has also unveiled plans to inaugurate roughly one new store per week until the end of the year. The supermarket has identified several confirmed locations, including Sefton in Liverpool, Pacific Drive in Eastbourne, Brimington in Chesterfield, and Shoreditch in London.

Moreover, Aldi has released an updated list of priority locations across the UK for new store openings. Each site is expected to accommodate a 20,000 sq ft store with approximately 100 parking spaces, ideally located near a main road with good visibility and accessibility.

Additionally, Aldi is actively seeking sites to introduce its Aldi Local store format in Central London zones one and two, which typically require a minimum of 5,000 sq ft trading space and an additional 3,000 sq ft of ancillary space.

Aldi has confirmed its decision to close all stores on Boxing Day, reopening on December 27, 2025, to allow employees to spend time with their loved ones. Similarly, stores will be closed on New Year’s Day and resume operations on January 2, 2026. Leading up to Christmas, Aldi will extend its opening hours to accommodate customer needs for the holiday season.
