A tragic incident unfolded when a man lost his life after a dog accidentally caused his vehicle to run over him. James Campbell, a 68-year-old resident of Cantonment in Tampa, Florida, died in January 2013 while assisting his wife in parking their 1995 Chevrolet van in their driveway.
During the maneuver, Campbell exited the van to open the driveway gates, leaving the door ajar. Simultaneously, his wife, Iris Fortner, was in the driver’s seat and opened her door to locate him behind the vehicle. Seizing the opportunity, their pet dog leaped into the driver’s seat, inadvertently pressing the accelerator and causing the van to reverse, tragically striking Campbell.
Despite his wife’s frantic efforts to halt the van, it was too late, and Campbell was fatally injured. Emergency responders pronounced him dead at the scene. Campbell’s wife sustained minor injuries and was taken to West Florida Hospital for treatment. Although no charges were filed, the incident highlighted the grave danger posed by a running vehicle, an unrestrained dog, and an engaged gear.
In another peculiar event in Miami that same month, residents were awoken by their dog’s barking to find a naked intruder attempting to harm their pet Rottweiler. The homeowner intervened, shooting the intruder in the leg to protect their dog. Miami Police Department spokesperson Willie Moreno described the intruder’s irrational behavior, confirming the shooting as justified due to the immediate threat posed.
The strange incidents involving dogs in Florida underscore the unpredictable nature of pets and the need for vigilance in ensuring their safety and that of those around them.
