A tragic incident in Chile’s Patagonia region claimed the life of British tourist Victoria Bond during a severe snowstorm that also led to the deaths of several others. Bond, who worked as the head of public relations for Visit Isles of Scilly, was described by her employers as being on a once-in-a-lifetime adventure with friends in Argentina and Chile when the disaster struck.
The British casualty was among five individuals found after a challenging search operation in Torres del Paine National Park. Efforts are now underway to repatriate the bodies of the victims, which include two German and two Mexican nationals. Bond’s colleagues expressed deep sorrow over her passing, highlighting her vibrant personality and dedication to her work over the years.
Visit Isles of Scilly officials, including Chair Andrew Sells and Executive Vice Chair Euan Rodger, mourned Bond’s untimely death, praising her contributions and character. The Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office confirmed its support for Bond’s family in the wake of the tragedy. Chilean President Gabriel Boric Font extended condolences to the families affected by the accident, emphasizing the country’s commitment to assist them.
Following the completion of the search and rescue efforts in Patagonia, authorities are now focused on returning the recovered bodies to their respective countries. The FCDO continues to liaise with local authorities to provide assistance to Bond’s loved ones during this difficult time.
